Stop Smoking Aids That Work

stop smoking aidsThose that have tried know that quitting smoking is certainly no easy task. In fact, smoking cigarettes is one of the most powerful addictions there are, i know i have been there. There are a few lucky people who quit “cold turkey” – they put down the cigarettes and never pick them up again, but unfortunately, they are few and far between; and many people who do quit will take up smoking again within 2 – 3 months.

Luckily, there are several stop smoking aids available today, and many of these aids can help you kick the smoking habit for good!

Reasons to Quit Smoking

If you need further incentive to kick the habit, here are several very good reasons:

•    Smoking related illnesses are responsible for approximately 440,000 deaths yearly in the United States.

•    Smoking may cause emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

•    Smoking is responsible for 87% of lung cancer cases.

•    Cigarettes contain at least 43 carcinogens (cancer-causing substances).

•    Smoking is the number 1 cause of preventable death in the United States.

•    Benefits of stopping smoking occur within 20 minutes after your last cigarette.

•    Second-hand smoke is responsible for 3,000 lung cancer deaths per year.

•    Your sense of smell and taste will greatly improve shortly after quitting.

•    Smoking causes premature aging. Who wants wrinkles?

•    Smoking is no longer socially acceptable and is frowned upon.

•    Smoking may cause impotence.

•    Smokers have frequent infections, such as sinus infections.

•    Smoking decreases your activity level.

•    Smoking is not allowed in most public places.

•    Smoking is very expensive!

So Which Stop Smoking Aids Are Available?

Okay, now you know why you should quit, but how do you go about it? There are several stop smoking aids available today. Here are some to consider:

1.    Smokeless cigarettes

While smokeless cigarettes are not sold as an smoking cessation aid, they have helped many smokers quit smoking, and the use of smokeless cigarettes is much healthier than smoking traditional cigarettes. The electronic cigarette is operated by a small lithium battery and simulates the act of smoking. This helps the smoker who is not only addicted the nicotine, but also to the actual act of smoking, i.e., holding and puffing on a cigarette.

The user puffs on the electronic cigarette, the tip lights to look like a real cigarette, and the vapor that is exhaled looks like cigarette smoke, yet the vapor does not have cancer-causing substances found in traditional cigarettes, and therefore, is no threat to others.  Smokers who try the electronic cigarette as the “first cigarette” of the day often give up traditional cigarettes. Smokeless cigarettes may have nicotine or nicotine-free cartridges and are available in regular and menthol flavor, as well as light and full strength.

There are some great products available with more money being spent on research and production you can find some very good brands. Check out our Green Smoke review and The Safe Cig review for some of our top pick e-cigs.

2.    Nicotine gum

Nicotine gum is available without a prescription and comes in several flavors.  The gum is chewed slowly, unlike regular chewing gum.  Treatment usually starts with 2 mg. gum. Heavy smokers may try 4 mg. gum. You may chew up to 30 pieces of 2 mg. or 24 pieces of 4 mg. daily, and gradually reduce the number of pieces chewed daily. Try decreasing 1 piece every 4 to 7 days. By 2 or 3 months, try to cut down to 2 pieces a day, and then try to stop chewing the gum altogether. Chewing too much gum, or chewing on the gum constantly, may cause tingling in the mouth and lips, jaw soreness, and worse, overdose. Follow the package directions carefully.

3.    Nicotine patches

Nicotine patches are available over-the-counter and deliver nicotine to the body, but in a much safer way than smoking cigarettes, without all the added harmful toxins of cigarettes.  The patch is applied to the skin and releases a slow, steady stream of nicotine to the system. Users gradually taper off of the nicotine patch. Approximately 20% of people quit smoking with the use of nicotine patches.

4.    Nicotine inhalers

The nicotine inhaler is a device that delivers a small dose of nicotine. When you inhale, the nicotine enters your bloodstream. You should hold the vapor in your mouth for a few seconds and then blow it out, rather than inhale it into your lungs. Inhalers are available by prescription and work short term, so must be inhaled frequently during the day to control cravings.

5.    Zyban and Chantix

Zyban and Chantix are two of the most well-know prescription anti-smoking drugs that work by blocking nicotine receptors to the brain. They are generally prescribed for 12 weeks, with the option to follow with another 12 weeks. Side effects of Chantix may include as nausea, vomiting, abnormal dreams, constipation, and flatulence, and sometimes, serious neuropsychiatric events, including depression, suicidal thoughts, suicidal behavior, agitation, and hostility. Zyban may cause headache and dry mouth, and rarely severe allergic reactions or seizures. Zyban also may cause depression or suicidal thoughts or behavior.

Quit Smoking Summary

Stopping smoking is the best thing by far that you can do for your health, and the health of those around you. Whatever stop-smoking aid you decide to try, give it some time, and if it doesn’t work for you, try another stop-smoking aid.  Remember that nicotine replacement therapy is far better for you than smoking cigarettes, with tar and other carcinogens. Have faith in yourself and you will succeed in quitting smoking.

For me, the smokeless cigarette was the only thing that managed to keep me off the cigarettes, the main reason for this was beacause out of all the options it is the only one that offers an almost like for like when it comes to the ‘physical act’ of smoking. It was an easy transition compared to using patches or gum which still left me with the need to keep my hands busy!

All i can say is, if you are looking for a solution and haven’t yet tried e-cigs, then for your own sake try them out! Take a little time and pick one or two brands that you like the look of and make that step.

The reason this website was put together was to help people discover a way to help kick the habit the way i did a couple of years ago, so if you need any help or have any questions about anything you see on then please don’t hesitate to get in touch either through the comments below or by using the contact form.

As far as I know the e-cigarettes put off water vapor instead of smoke. Now the refills can the be used on the same e-cigarette? Also I have heard of E-liquid to refill the cartridges. I live in PA and the E-liquid is very cheap here and you can get it just about any weir. So if I could use e-liquid to refill the cartridges it would be so much cheaper. Also can some one explain in detail how e-cigarettes work. How they are charged from about how long they last. That would be a big help in decide weather or not to get them.

  2. Oaksy says:

How do you know when the cartridge is empty? I’ve noticed that even when you inhale with the empty protective cap that the water vapor still comes out. So, how do you know when it’s empty?. I use the 21st Century brand..

    • Jonny H says:

I change my cartridge when i get that kind of burnt/singed taste, you will know it when it happens! This is my signal to switch.

  3. Zack says:

Are electronic Cigarettes allowed to be used inside Penn State facilities?

    • Jonny H says:

I don’t know about that Zack you would have to get in touch with the authorities.

Personally i doubt they would be due to them being a small metal object, but then again i have never been ‘inside’!

  4. jakebrig says:

Has anyone used the electronic cigarettes to quit smoking? Does it work?

    • Jonny H says:

Although they are not classed as a smoking cessation device and i can’t promote them as such, i have 🙂

      • Tami says:

Hi. I quit the hard way and didn’t
smoke for 4 and 1/2 years. Cause
of stress I started up again. I tried
to quit using the e cog, and it worked pretty
well, but I reccomend having 2 so you
don’t buy cigarettes while its charging.
I did that once and blew everything. The e cigar still have nicotine, so its not like you lose that desire right away. I think Ill stick to the old fashioned way.

I’m interested in the electronic cigarette because I can basically smoke it anywhere and its much cheaper than buying pack after pack in my opinion. What is the best brand, or better yet, what brand gives off the most smoke?.

      Hi Bazzabox,

    • Jonny H says:

I have never used the refills so cannot help you there. I like the simplicity of using e cigarettes that are compatible with cartomizers.

Take a look at my reviews for some recommendations.

  10. Aimiee says:

Is there anywhere else you can buy the blu electronic cigarette other than online? And has anyone tried them? They seem like a great alternative. I am by no means a regular smoker. Maybe 3 a week or I just smoke at parties haha.

Hi Aimiee, i am yet to try the Blu Cig, i have heard it’s good so may buy one soon and post a review as i am a bit nosey like that 🙂

Hey. I have a blu cig brand electronic cigarette and don’t want to waste time ordering new cartridges from the company. Is there any way I can refill the same cartridges ( with the proper e liquid of course ) over and over again? Or must I buy a certain refilable cartridge for this to be.

    • Jonny H says:

Apparantly you can but it sounds like a bit of a pain if you don’t know what you are doing.

Check out Youtube there are some videos on there.

  15. Page says:

I found out 2 weeks ago that I am about 6 weeks pregnant. I am a smoker and have been since I was 11. I am now 23. Obviously I know that smoking while pregnant is bad, and I have tried really hard to kick the habit. I have managed to cut down from about 30 per day to 5-7 but obviously that’s still not very good. I have tried the patches, gum and inhaler but still end up having a cigarette a couple of times a day. My last option is to try the electronic cigarettes, but are these safe/safer to use during pregnancy. Please no snide comments!!!!.

    • Jonny H says:

Again when someone asks me “Are e cigarettes safe for me” i cannot answer that.

Page if you can’t stop smoking while you are pregnant, which is the only solution, then go to your doctor and ask him about alternatives.

  17. Vallez says:

Is the Green Smoke electronic cigarette really worth the money?

  18. Ironman says:

At the moment I am an occasional cigar smoker (one cigar about every other day). I am not looking to quit smoking all together because I actually started for health reasons, I know sounds stupid but I have done a lot of research on the matter and the nicotine has some positive side effects for me. The problem is that I am a health conscious person and it concerns me that I’m going to be a smoker for the rest of my life. I chose cigars over cigarettes because I don’t want to inhale anything and destroy my lungs because I am a runner. I have started doing research to see if there are any alternatives to smoking and most of what came up are e-cigarettes. It seems that these are designed for the purpose of quitting and since that’s not my intent are they worth it? Are they honestly healthier than smoking and would they be harder on my lungs than cigars since I would have to actually inhale? I understand the basic idea of how they work but not enough to know if they would work for what I would be using them for. Are they designed to be smoked every few days for years and years? My other concern with this is I can buy a months worth of cheap cigars for under $20 and would rather not quadruple this expense by buying electronic cigarettes or electronic cartridges. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!.

    • Jonny H says:

I probably wouldn’t recommend buying e cigs if you are not a smoker. If you are ok with your cigars then i would stick with them.

If however you want to be able to smok indoors without drowning everyone in cigar smoke 🙂 then take a look at theses e cigars, yes you heard right!

E-lites sell these, i have not tried them yet but they start from about $20 and last for about “400 puffs”! Look interesting!

  19. James says:

Is it legal for someone in Canada to order electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) from a US supplier?

    • Jonny H says:

i can’t speak for all e cig companies but when i asked the guys over at The Safe Cig they said they do.

  20. Lucey17 says:

My mom has had a triple bypass & a heart attack, but she still struggles with wanting a cigarette. Are the non-nicotine electronic cigarettes safe for her?.

    • Jonny H says:

I am not a doctor but common sense tells me no, e cigarettes would not be safe if she has had a major heart operation.

  21. Alumba says:

I’ve been trying to get my grandma to quit smoking and havnt had any luck. She says it’s just a habit so I’ve been looking at these Blu electronic cigarettes. She would use it if I got it for her, I was just wondering if the are heathier than real cigarettes, because I’m not going to buy it if it’s not any better than real cigarettes..

    • Jonny H says:

Hi Alumba, when you compare the ingredients of tobacco cigarettes and electronic cigarettes i would go for e cigarettes every time.

Not only have i not had a tobacco cigarette for a long time but i find myself smoking a lot less of the e cigarette as well.

  28. electronic cigarette smoking cessation is effective says:

Hi! I’m a moron who watched the stupid ad for electronic cigarettes that only white trash hillbillies would actually purchase. If they’re not real cigarettes, does that mean I can smoke them in the non-smoking areas and in hospitals? I figure if they complain I can make a grotesque grimace with my face and say in a whiny, pompous voice to them: “It’s not real smoke! It’s only water vapor! Are you STUPID or something?” and then everyone around will laugh at them for sure! Are they safe for kids, too? I’m sure lots of kids will realize just how “cool” smoking is by watching the ad and then whine at their overworked, underpaid lower-middle class parents that they need some to be even more chavtastic than the little losers already are! And their parents will screech in their angry, complaining housewife voices that no, no they cannot have cigarettes. And then they kids will simply reason with them with the well-informed bon-mot: “But it’s only water vapor! Nyeearr!” Because, you know, smoking is something that we as a society really need to make our number one priority! Or even our number 5823rd priority! And that’s why it’s important that in 2010 instead of fixing the economy or getting people jobs we should revitalize the whole concept of smoking instead..

  30. e-liquid mixing kit says:

(This might belong in the ‘Health’ section. If so, I apologize). . Alright, I was a smoker for a long time (not comparatively, but I smoked from about ages 15 to 22- happy that I quit!) and I have since “quit”.. . What I mean is that in day-to-day life I quit. I don’t smoke at work, at home, in the car, etc. But when I go out to the bar or have some buddies over for beers, all I can think about is having a smoke (beer and tobacco pair so well..). I’ve seen these electronic cigarettes and I’m intrigued by the somewhat healthier and less expensive alternative. My roommate got one from a mall kiosk, but its a cheapy piece of crap. Wondering if anyone has any experience with any of the quality brands of E-Cig? If so, what was your experience?. -Did it quell the need to have a real smoke?. -Does it taste like a real cigarette?. -Do you feel like you got your money’s worth?. . Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks much..

There are some cheap products out there, i tried one and it wasn’t good so i don’t even bother buying them for review purposes anymore.

It’s a good job it wasn’t the first one i ever tried, would have put me off!

The majority of brands covered on this site are high quality products but my persona; favorites are Safe Cig and Green Smoke, and yes i have and do use them!

  31. e-liquid calculator download says:

Fellow Cigarette Smokers Lol! All I want to know is are regular cigarettes worth giving up for the e-cigarette? Can I get the full flavor and TASTE as a regular cigarette from these things? I know they come in menthol, but do they taste or feel like a cheap Paul Maul or a delicious Kool or Newport? How long does a cartridge last? If you feel they are worth it completely or at least trying it out, which BRAND is the best to use since there are multiple e-cigarettes out there? Thanks in advance..

    • Jonny H says:

They don’t taste exactly like cigarettes, which really is no big loss. You will get a similar taste that in my opinion is a lot better.

It does take getting used to but when you do you probably won’t like the taste of cigs anymore 🙂
